Before dealing cards, players select four schools of magic from the available eight, which include everything from items to elemental tricks to transfiguration. Each school is designed to have natural synergies and counters, so it balances itself a little better than just a few hundred random spells. Even so, the game is very random. But it's supposed to be that way.
Unlike Gears of War's utterly random dice rolling combat, Wiz War filters its randomness through the players themselves. You're given a hand of cards and its your job to figure out how to make the most of them. In effect, the game asks you not only to lasso chaos itself, but to ride it.
Embrace the ChaosBecause the game ends so quickly (somewhere between twenty minutes to an hour), it's hard to stay mad at it, especially when you can reset the game in about ten seconds. It's light enough, random enough and short enough to make it all work.
If you remember a game called Star Wars: Epic Duels, this is the next rung up the ladder of complexity, but the gameplay is largely identical. Move your character, play some cards and hope for the best. Massaging tactics out of your cards is part of the inherent challenge.
Like one of my other favorite games, Cosmic Encounter, Wiz War isn't a supremely deep tactical challenge; its gameplay is random and varied. The only thing you really control is your interaction with other players. Staying alive until you draw into an strong Wombo Combo is part of the appeal. Your job is to keep everyone else from winning until that happens, however. This isn't anything like chess, but rather a beer and pretzels game that will take forty five minutes of your time and leave you with stories to tell.
The House RulesBecause the game has so many cards that can interact in a variety of different ways, it's important to have a firm understanding of the rules. This hasn't been a problem with our group, but a cursory glance around the internet will reveal this as a potential problem for most people. If you don't have a way to resolve rules disputes, or if you have a player who seems to cause them, beware.
However, I was delighted to find a bunch of variant rules in the back of the rulebook. After trying them out, I realized this game is like a sandbox. Want to play with every card in the game? Remove all counterspells? Make all spells fail 75% of the time? This game will let you do it with ease. I find it very interesting that it's a board game that you can play as much as play with.

There are many techniques used to handle stress, but if you are looking for a quick fix, why not turn to your iPhone for support? There really are apps for everything now and while these relaxing iPhone apps won't be suitable for severe cases, they will certainly help to calm you down from the stresses of daily life. With Bubble Machine, your iPhone turns into a bubble blower. To make it work, blow into the microphone at the bottom of the phone, and bubbles will be blown across your screen! The background for the bubbles is a clear blue sky but there is "sunlight" shining down from the top so the bubbles sparkle as they float. If you blow for long enough, the bubbles become really huge and there is even more fun in the fact that you can pop them too!
As mentioned, this one can really only be used when you aren't out in public, but it is quite therapeutic. Granted, if you have a short attention span it probably won't entertain you for long, but for a free iPhone app, it is quite good for relaxing.

If you are the type of person who could watch fish swimming around for hours, you will love Koi Pond. This is one of the easier to use relaxing iPhone apps, but still as effective as the more expensive ones. With this app, you are given a clear pond. You can change the colour of the water, the amount of fish and the amount of lily pads which float around. The water has a very gentle ripple to it, so even just watching that alone is quite calming. Tapping the iPod screen makes bigger ripples and the fish will swim around them. If you ripple the water too much, the fish will all hide away off screen but they come back when it is calm again. Koi Pond also has some lovely effects. You can make it rain, add the sound of birds, wind, frogs and butterflies but you don't have to have them all on or all off. You can pick and choose. The lite version of Silent Island may be enough for some people, though there is a paid version if you need more variety. The lite version is simple a picture of a mountain on an island surrounded by beautiful blue water. The sound effects are a mix of relaxing music and sounds of nature which play for different lengths of time. If you don't stop the music yourself, you can just close the app and the music will keep on playing until it has finished. This makes it really good for helping you drift off to sleep. Other features included in the free version of Silent Island are a slideshow which looks all around the island and a video of ice floating around in water.
Although ice floating in water sounds terribly boring, when combined with the soothing music, it is one of the most relaxing things I have ever watched in my life! The music is really what makes this app so fantastic. It is so calming that that you can really feel all of your stresses leaving you. If you enjoy the app, it may be worth the money to upgrade to the full version.
As with all medical problems, it is important to see a doctor if the symptoms are becoming too much for you to handle. However, if you just need a quick fix to calm your frayed nerves, these relaxing iPhone apps may well do the job. Not all of them will work for everyone, but of all of the apps I searched through, these were the ones I found most useful. Try them out and hopefully you will feel much more at ease too!
